Dayton escapes Rhode Island with 68-66

Darrell Davis made a go-ahead three-pointer from the corner with 20 seconds left and No. 19 Dayton beat Rhode Island 68-66 on Friday night.

Rhode Island's Four McGlynn had his game-tying shot attempt challenged in the final seconds, and Dayton got the rebound. Steve McElevene was fouled and made 1-2 free throws as the Flyers won at the Ryan Center for the first time since 2005.

Dyshawn Pierre led Dayton (21-3, 11-1 Atlantic-10) with 17 points and also had nine rebounds. Scoochie Smith added 13 points, and Davis and Cooke finished with eight.

McGlynn had 19 points for Rhode Island (14-11, 6-6). Hassan Martin added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Dayton matches their best start in conference at 11-1, matching the 2002-2003 team that win on to win the Atlantic 10 Championship.
