Dayton center, McElvene, passes away at 20

Tragic news out of Dayton on Thursday. Flyers center, Steve McElvene, passed away unexpectedly, he was just 20 years old. McElvene just finished his first season of college basketball after redshirting during the 2014-2015 season.

Sources close to the New Haven native confirmed the news to FlyerHoops.net on Thursday. According to Glenn Marini of WANE TV, McElvene collapsed and died in his home. An enlarged heart is believed to be the cause, Marini tweeted.

His AAU program, confirmed the news on twitter as well.

He averaged 6.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.7 blocked shots during the 2015-2016 season.

“Big Steve” received his nickname because of his 6-11, 268-pound stature. It might as well have been because of the giant smile he possessed, both on and off the court.

The tragic news comes a little more than 20 years after Dayton center Chris Daniels passed away in his sleep during the 1995-1996 season.

Another young person taken from us way too early. Rest in Peace, Big Steve. You will be missed.
